“I’ve been to Tokyo once, and it was a great experience—completely different from Okinawa. Okinawa has more of a slow, island vibe, but you still get a mix of foreign tourists and people from mainland Japan. Learning a bit of Japanese before my trip to Tokyo made such a huge difference. It just made everything smoother—navigating, ordering food, even just small talk with people. One time, this older Japanese guy just waved us into a place, and we ended up hanging out for an hour or two, just talking in this mix of Japanese and English. It was a really cool experience.
As for useful conversations, the biggest one for me is when I walk my dog. He’s big, so people always comment—like, ‘こわいねー (scary!)’ or ‘おっきいねー (big!).’ That always sparks a conversation. The second would just be general small talk—introducing myself, talking about where I’m from, what I’m doing. And third, practical stuff, like taking taxis or making restaurant reservations. I actually had to call a restaurant once because I didn’t get a confirmation email, and that was super hard, but it worked out.
Before Japan, I had taken French and Spanish in high school, but that was completely different. Japanese was tough at first because I didn’t know how to start. I tried using apps like Duolingo, but I wasn’t really retaining anything. Plus, the phrases weren’t natural—like, nobody actually says certain things in real life the way the apps teach. Once I started with an instructor, it was way better because I could actually apply what I was learning in real conversations.
That’s what I like about Japan Language Factory—it’s not like a traditional class where you follow a textbook for months before learning anything useful. You start with what you actually need. If you’re in Japan, you probably just want to be able to interact with people, not spend years studying grammar first. With this method, you learn what’s relevant to you right away—whether that’s talking about your dog, ordering food, or making friends. And once you start using it, it motivates you to learn even more.
For anyone coming to Japan who’s intimidated by the language, I’d say don’t think of it as ‘learning Japanese’—that’s overwhelming. Instead, just start with something small, like ordering a drink or asking for directions. Once you have a short conversation and it actually works, it feels awesome. That kind of moment makes you realize, ‘Oh, I can do this!’ And from there, it just gets easier.”
I’m so grateful for my lessons with Shono-san. She focused on the practical side first—how to order at restaurants, talk to my wife’s family, and handle everyday life in Japan. I loved that I got to choose the topics I needed most, instead of being overwhelmed with reading and writing right away. Having that flexibility and support gave me the confidence to speak on my own, and now I feel like I can fully enjoy Japan. It’s been a huge part of my life here.”
I’ve always loved Japan—I grew up watching anime and dreamed of moving here. Teaching English seemed like the easiest path, even though I didn’t speak any Japanese. I figured I’d be fine, but day-to-day tasks suddenly felt impossible because I couldn’t communicate basic things. Grammar and vocabulary are one thing, but real conversation is another.
Eventually, I realized studying on my own wasn’t enough. I needed to get out there, find hobbies I enjoy (like sewing), and actually talk to people in Japanese. That’s my biggest advice: don’t hide behind textbooks or apps. Join clubs, make friends, and chat about topics you care about. You’ll make mistakes, but that’s how you learn. Push yourself, and over time, you’ll see real progress.”
I grew up in a house my family has owned since 1878, when they first moved here from Japan. Even though I’m part Japanese, I was mostly surrounded by American culture—especially after World War II, my family really focused on blending in. That meant they stopped speaking Japanese, used only English, and took on Western names. So, even though we still love Japanese food—I mean, my dad’s white but he’s crazy about Japanese cuisine—nobody in my family speaks Japanese anymore.
For me, though, I’ve always been drawn to my heritage. I want to understand our history better and learn the language that we lost. That’s why I’m excited about moving on to Level 2 and Level 3 at Japan Language Factory. It’s giving me a chance to connect to my roots in ways my family hasn’t done for generations. Plus, I’m looking forward to our next group sessions and some new YouTube collaborations. I think it’s going to open up a whole new world for me, and I can’t wait to share that journey with everyone. Arigato gozaimasu!”
I just finished 20 hours with Japan Language Factory, and honestly, I’m so excited about how much progress I’ve made. Like, I can’t believe how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time. I feel really confident now, and it’s just been such a great experience. Before this, I had tried textbooks and apps like Duolingo, but it was just hard to stay consistent or even remember things. I think what really made the difference this time was the mindset shift and how interactive it was. The lessons weren’t just about memorizing; it was about building confidence and learning in a way that actually stuck with me. One big thing for me was overcoming the fear of speaking and making mistakes. I realized that fear was just in my head. Once I let go of that and trusted the process, I started seeing progress, and that kept me motivated. Also, incorporating Japanese into my everyday life made a huge difference. I listen to Japanese music and watch anime, and now I actually understand some of the phrases and words I’ve been learning! It’s such a cool feeling when things start to click, and it’s made learning so much more fun. I think my advice for anyone who’s thinking about learning Japanese is to just go for it. Don’t let fear hold you back. Trust the process, and find ways to keep it a part of your everyday life. Whether it’s music, shows, or just practicing with someone, keep it fun and consistent. I’m so grateful for this experience, and I can’t wait to keep learning and improving. Thank you so much to Japan Language Factory for helping me on this journey!

Curtis:
“I’ve been learning Japanese on and off since high school and even did a short exchange trip to Japan, but I always got stuck in that formal, textbook style of learning. It was all about grammar rules—te form, ru form, particles, and all that. I could read and write a bit, but when it came to speaking, I’d overthink everything. It was like, ‘Do I use ga or ni?’ and that would just make me freeze up in conversation.
But with JLF, it’s totally different. It’s all about speaking and getting comfortable, not just memorizing grammar. I’m actually able to hold conversations now, not just sound like a Google Translate version of myself. It’s really about using the language, not just learning it in theory. It’s made a huge difference, and now I feel a lot more confident when I speak Japanese.”
Alex:
“I’m half Japanese, so I always wanted to learn the language, but it felt intimidating. I’d tried in high school and college, but it didn’t stick. It was just memorizing words and rules. I always felt a bit guilty, especially since people would ask, ‘Oh, do you speak Japanese?’ and I’d have to say no.
When I started with JLF, it was totally different. The one-on-one classes really helped me, and I had this breakthrough moment where it all started clicking. It wasn’t just about memorizing; it was about actually using Japanese in conversations. And having someone there to guide me made me realize that learning Japanese is actually possible. If anyone thinks they can’t do it, trust me—JLF is the way to go.”
Through this program, I was able to practice specific subjects with my assigned teacher. This personalized approach helped me retain most of what I learned, which is essential for my work. The program allowed me to remember and effectively use important Japanese phrases and concepts in both professional and personal contexts. I felt truly grateful for this tailored learning experience.
Great experience overall. Both of the coaches I had were very patient and supportive throughout my journey. I definitely had a lot of challenges balancing my personal schedule with the course and the coaches were very accommodating. I certainly feel more comfortable with my Japanese, which is something that I couldn’t quite achieve with books and audio lessons alone.
My experience with the Japan Language Faculty has been amazing. The teachers are so helpful, patient, and easy to learn from—nothing like the tough school environments I was used to. Even with my busy schedule in the military, managing two hospitals and traveling, I found time to study and practice with co-workers and friends. Thanks to the Faculty, my Japanese speaking and pronunciation have improved a lot. My friends noticed the progress too, and it’s all thanks to the support and great teaching here. You all made a big difference in my learning journey
Learning core phrases and how to use different vocabulary with those phrases helped built up basic communication skills I was lacking in. Reviewing and roleplaying conversations in the following lessons helped strengthen what was learned in the previous lesson so you can build upon what you learned and add more phrases for everyday conversation or specific subjects. I found that this course did provide what I was looking for and couldn’t get from just reading a textbook. I’m very happy I found JLF.
Before my course at Japan Language Factory, I felt completely lost and unable to communicate in everyday situations, such as asking for directions if I ended up at the wrong train station. I relied heavily on my phone and translator apps, which was often confusing and ineffective. However, after completing the intensive Japanese course at Japan Language Factory, I can confidently ask for help and navigate all the challenges that once seemed overwhelming. This course has not only improved my language skills but has also significantly enhanced my ability to live and work in Japan. It’s truly been a life-changing experience!
Since joining Japan Language Factory, I feel great about using Japanese regularly. The structured lessons and supportive environment helped me overcome the initial discomfort of speaking Japanese. My progress has been noticeable, especially with the positive feedback I receive from my son and others. The ongoing practice and encouragement from the instructors have been crucial in my journey. I highly recommend this program for anyone serious about learning Japanese.

“JLF helped me actually speak Japanese, not just understand it!!!”
My interest in Japan has been there for a long time. Growing up, I was always exposed to Japanese culture—cars, entertainment, the overall quality of things coming out of Japan. That stayed with me, and over time, traveling to Japan made me realize there was so much more to experience beyond just being a visitor.
The problem was the language. Even though I could recognize some kanji because of my background, that didn’t mean I could actually speak. Being able to read a little or understand something here and there is completely different from being able to communicate in real life. That gap became very clear to me.
Before JLF, I hadn’t really found a way to start. It felt intimidating, and I didn’t have a clear reference for what actually works. The turning point for me was seeing someone I knew—Willis—who was already speaking Japanese. That made it real. It showed me that it was possible, and that gave me the push to try.
What made Japan Language Factory different is the approach. Instead of focusing on reading and memorization, everything is built around conversation. From the beginning, I was speaking in real situations. It felt very different from anything I had tried before. It’s more situational, more practical, and it actually helps things stick.
Another thing I noticed is how this method changes the way you think. You’re not just learning words—you’re learning how to use them in context. That made it easier to remember and also made the process more interesting, because it’s connected to real life.
Working with my coach has been an important part of that experience. My coach helped guide me through conversations, corrected me naturally, and made it easier to keep going even when I wasn’t sure what to say. That support made it much more comfortable to speak and improve.
As I continued, I also realized something unexpected. This process helped me open up more, not just in Japanese but in general communication. I hadn’t really been talking to new people or having conversations like that for a long time. Through this, I started to feel more comfortable interacting again, which was something I didn’t expect.
At the same time, it also changed how I think about the future. Japan is no longer just a place I visit—it’s somewhere I can actually imagine living. Whether it’s retiring there, bringing business there, or just building a different kind of lifestyle, it feels more possible now.
Japanese went from being something distant and difficult to something I can actually use. And that shift opened up a lot more than just language—it opened up new possibilities.
